My Kids, The Public Speakers
Posted by KimSep 8
One of the unique facets of our home school co-op is that the boys are expected to give a short oral presentation every week in class. And then once a year, we present as a family to the whole school.
Today was our 3rd family presentation. And let me just say the prior 50 experiences seem to have paid off! We decided to tell the school about our up-coming trip to Guatemala. I introduced us and wrapped up. But the boys told everyone about the places we’re planning to see.
For about a minute each.
But still.
They just turned 6 and they are comfortable standing in front of a group of 75+ people – adults as well as other kids – and talking knowledgeably about a subject!
These boys - the sons of a mother who truly would have opted in college to be shot rather than having to give a speech in front of a class (fortunately, as it turns out, her professor didn’t allow for the former option, so Mamacita had to get over it).
I was up there with them, so I don’t have a picture. But, as is part of the deal with these things, I DO have witnesses! Some of whom have watched from the beginning. The first year when two tiny 4-year-olds hid behind my legs as I presented something we were learning that year. (They were supposed to be speaking along with me, but no…). The second year, when they didn’t exactly hide behind my legs but would only give one-word answers to questions I’d thought of ahead of time. And now, year three, they’re speaking. In complete sentences.
AND we don’t have to do the “big” family presentation again for another year.
So, for those of you who think we home schoolers are plotting to take over the world, why yes, yes we are. My kids can never be President, but who wants all that stress anyway? They’re gonna be ready for something. Can’t wait to see what.

Don’t say never…its possible things could change…but for now your right…..Mary sat in her teachers chair last year to talk about the scrapbook pages I did while I was away…I only have the picture since the neighbor up the street happen to be there. She looked so cute.
