Kim this was a great inciteful post. My church is super diverse, but most folks don't have authentic relationships with people outside their own backgrounds.

Inviting someone to your home to share a meal is a great ice breaker. Scary as all get out because of the potential awkwardness, but the rewards of a interesting new friendship makes it worth it.

Blessings to you, your husband, and the boys.

Kim, Good for you! I applaud your desire to connect with your children and their heritage. Although not entirely comfortable for you but you see the importance of teaching your children about themselves. You are making a good example for your children! I also have to tell you that this group WILL respect you for learning more about your children's culture. With you being in the class with them you will also start to wipe away some of the stereo types that they may feel for others. You are doing a great job in educating your family and others. Anytime we try something new it is hard to be ourselves but given time we are much better people and can accept the differences and and recognize the simularities of each of us. Making it a better world for all of us.

Yeah, Fred took Spanish in school, too, but has lost a lot of it. It did help us enough to get around in Guatemala the week we were there, though. And the people there were very friendly and sincerely wanted to understand us. Can't wait to go back again!

Great post!! I too took French and am now kicking myself. My husband did take Spanish but can't remember much. I would love to do something like that as well. Been struggling with how to accomplish more assimilation into the local hispanic community. We live in a very diverse area, but not diverse with Hispanics, so its tough.
